Grass cools surrounding areas. As much as 50% of heat striking a turf area is eliminated by a process called 'transpiration' in which plants cool themselves. So your grass acts like a miniature air conditioner.
Turfgrass acts as a water filter and helps to clean up our urban environment.
A 2500 square foot lawn produces enough oxygen for a family of four.
A healthy root system is your lawn's best defense against invasive pests, weeds and stress due to heat, cold or drought.
A healthy lawn prevents water run-off and encourages growth of beneficial organisms such as earthworms, soil microbes and beneficial insects.
Lawns serve as air filters and collect dust and dirt, trapping 12 million tons annually in the U.S. atmosphere.
Lawns pull in greenhouse gases as they grow and reduce carbon dioxide caused by burning fossil fuels.
Other Tips
Spring - During the spring we'll take care of your lawn to build density and maintain color. What you should do – or we can do it for you:
- Clean up litter, leaves and twigs from your lawn to avoid damaging or suffocating your turf.
- If we do not mow your property, check your mower blades before mowing and sharpen if they are dull.
- Adjust your irrigation system to maximize use and minimize wasted water.
- When mowing, only remove the top 1/3 of the grass blade. Mowing your lawn too short or too frequently can leave your lawn vulnerable to weed invasions and disease.
- To prevent heavy rain from causing tree or shrub root rot install splash blocks or drainage pipes to divert water away from landscaping.
Spring/Summer - As the growing season progresses, we provide nutrients to support your lawn against possible summer stress. What you should do – or we can do it for you:
- Your lawn needs a minimum of 1" of water per week which takes approximately 30 minutes of watering. (Please follow local water restrictions.)
- Maintain the healthiest height for your grass.
- Grass-cycle! That means that you leave grass clippings on your lawn after mowing and allow the clippings to decay naturally. This process returns significant amounts of nutrients to the soil which your lawn will use to grow.
Mid Summer - During summer months, we will continue to take care of your lawn to promote growth and vigor. We also inspect for health problems and will discuss options with you for resolving any issues we may find. What you should do – or we can do it for you:
- Your lawn needs a minimum of 1" of water per week which takes approximately 30 minutes of watering. (Please follow local water restrictions.)
- Maintain the healthiest height for your grass. Tall Fescue grass should be kept at 2"-3".
- Grass-cycle! That means that you leave grass clippings on your lawn after mowing and allow the clippings to decay naturally. This process returns significant amounts of nutrients to the soil which your lawn will use to grow.
- Be on the lookout for signs of random patches or wilted/brown turf which may indicate drought stress, disease or insect damage.
Summer/Fall - We treat your lawn to promote root growth and to increase turf density. What you should do – or we can do it for you:
- Thoroughly water once or twice a week. Deep watering is better for your lawn than frequent light prinkling. Measure water with a rain gauge or place a tuna can under your sprinkler system to catch water. When the tuna can is full, your lawn has received the recommended 1 inch of water. This should take about 30 minutes.
- Consider aerating your lawn to increase the amount of oxygen, moisture and nutrients available to your plants' roots. Have your soil pH checked! A simple soil test can give you a quick indication if your soil is lacking specific nutrients or the pH level needs to be adjusted.
- Fall is the best time for over seeding your lawn and touching up bare spots.
- Clean up leaves, branches and twigs to prevent smothering your grass.
- Mow your lawn until turf stops growing. This will ensure your lawn enters winter at the right height.
- Tune-up and clean your lawn mower before storing for winter.
- Fall rain combined with cooler air and warm soil makes this an ideal time to plant trees, shrubs and flowering bulbs. When planting trees and shrubs, place the plant in the hole so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Water so the soil is moist, but not wet, during the first few weeks after planting.
